Baby Food Makers: The Appliance to Skip
A steamer bolted to a small blender, sold for a feeding stage that is over almost as soon as it begins. A regular blender, a pot and a fork already do everything this appliance does — and they'll still be useful next year, which the baby food maker will not.

Baby Monitors: Audio, Video, or Nothing At All
A useful tool that the market has quietly turned into a surveillance product. The features that help are range, battery life and a screen you can ignore; the features that sell are the ones that keep you watching. Buy for your floor plan, and be sceptical of anything marketed as watching your baby's body.

White Noise Machines: What Actually Matters
One of the few nursery gadgets with a real job — masking household noise so naps survive the doorbell. The features that matter are boring: continuous sound without an audible loop, volume that goes properly low, and controls you can work in the dark. Most of what raises the price does not raise the performance.
